Adventure capital

The time in Bogotá showed us again that we enjoy beeing in smaller towns much more than the hectic city life. So for our last week in Colombia we decided to head to San Gil. This town is well known for all its action sport opportunities!

Tejo Time!

Another night bus took us really early in the morning to our next destination. Luckily we could check in at around 5 a.m. and were able to get some sleep before all the events started. Adventure capital was really the right definition for San Gil, as you were able to book different activities on every corner. From paragliding to 140 meters of bungee jumping and river rafting…

As we didn’t yet know with what to start, the event to play some Tejo, offered by our hostel, sounded great for a first evening. Tejo is a well known Colombian sport. It involves throwing a metal puck into a one by one meter board covered with clay. We know this sounds a little bit like bocha. But the special thing of Tejo is that the field contains some gunpowder! And of course you get the most points when you hit the middle area with your puck and make the gunpowder explode! Yes, it really explodes and is really loud! But still a very safe sport, we were told. 💥😅

This was a really great experience as we hung out with other travellers and a cool young Colombian guy. He also showed us this other sport, Bolo, which is some kind of bowling. The big difference is that you have to throw the ball over a field of 18 meters to hit the bowling pins. It sounded easier than it was…a really hard and exhausting sport. But with some beers it was fun and we had a great night out! 🎳🍻

And action!

The next day we decided to start with our first action package! This consisted of some different adrenaline filled experiences. We started out with some ziplining over a canyon. As Christian wanted to do this for a long time, he was really thrilled.

The next activity of a giant swing looked not so exciting from the outside. But when we were sitting there and beeing pulled up higher and higher…it was a real adrenaline rush swinging over the edge!

The last part of this package contained several adventures at once. We headed into a canyon with a local guide to do some of the famous canyoying! This involved jumping around 5 meters into water from a rock, rappelling down around 20 meters and just climbing over some rocky terrain. It was a lot of fun and also exhausting because of the heat. The rappelling was a totally new experience for the both of us and starring down 20 meters while only hanging on a rope gives you a big rush.🧗‍♀️

Flying high

After one day off for a relaxing short trip to the lovely nearby town of Barichara, we decided it was time for more action. This time not only more but higher… We booked a paragliding trip to the Chicamocha Canyon, one of the largest canyons worldwide. When we arrived at the platform we were pretty nervous and didn’t know what to expect. One of our two pilots explained us about the paragliding. We basically just had to run and then sit in front of the pilot and in the end we just lift up the feet. Sounded pretty easy.

Magda was the first one to get ready… a bit nervous but also excited she ran and within a minute she was up in the air paragliding over the canyon! Christian followed right after. The view was amazing and some birds, even an eagle, flew around us! 🦅

At first both of us really enjoyed it, but after spinning a lot of circles, Christian felt a little sick… So he didn’t really had much of it except the wish to go back down soon. Meanwhile Magda really enjoyed her flight. In the end of almost 40 minutes up in the air, Magda’s pilot spinned some extra rounds pretty fast, which felt a little lika a rollercoaster ride! It was really an outstanding experience. After the trip Christian was glad to spent the rest of the day on the ground and in bed. 😅

Pumped up with adrenaline we decided to spent the last days in Colombia just relaxing back in the capital. As a new adventure would already be waiting for us…
