Too hot to handle

From one of our favorite places Oaxaca de Juarez we decided to head to the coast. At first we were a bit hesitant because we read that the road is really curvy and well known to make people sick. But as it couldn’t get worse then some bus trips in Peru, we finally did it and took another overnight bus for 10 hours.

Trip to hippie paradise

The bus didn’t take us directly to our destination Mazunte. It stopped in Pochutla, a bigger town around 40 minutes away. There we had to find a local transport that would take us further. Of course the taxi drivers were trying to tell us again that there is no such thing on a Sunday. We kept looking, asked around and found the pickup. Another adventurous ride in the back of a jeep and we arrived in the small beach town of Mazunte!

The word town is overrated for Mazunte. It is more a really small hippie village. There is just one main street that passes a lot of restaurants, small supermarkets and places to sleep. It leads directly to the beach. The ocean there is normally quite calm and warm.

Hot, hotter, Mazunte

When we arrived we already felt the big change in climate compared to Oaxaca city where it even got a bit cold in the evening. With our big bags we made our way through the heat to the place we already booked over AirBnb. But somehow the owner messed up and the place was already booked… So we got another arrangement that wasn’t really worth mentioning! We only stayed there one night and found a nicer place as fast as we could… 😅

So we weren’t off to the best start…but we tried to forget that as soon as we hit the beach. It looked like beeing in paradise. On the first day we only went to the beach in the afternoon, enjoyed some food and the ocean of course. In the evening our activities included drinking beer, eating at too expensive restaurants or taking showers every few minutes as it was still so hot. Especially at night we had a hard time as our room only had a ventilator. We never would have thought that a place at the beach could be too hot to handle…

Sleep, sweating and some activities…

So as you can imagine our days in Mazunte were quite calm as there wasn’t much to do during this heat. We only made it to the beach in the afternoon as there were hardly any places in the shadow. But then it was quite relaxing!

Mazunte is also one of Mexicos pueblo magicos. It is well known for it’s National Center for Turtles. Even though the sun was burning down on us hard we made it into the center. It was quite informative and they had many different species of turtles, land and sea alike! We both never had seen such big sea turtles. From this day forward we were hoping even more to see them in the ocean someday!

As the whole coast has beach after beach, we thought about getting to know one other place. So we walked to the next small beach town which wasn’t really that different besides the bigger waves in the ocean. We both rented bodyboards and had to try this waves out! It was a lot of fun, even though we hurt ourselves a little bit on the surface of the boards…

One must-see is the great sunset at Punta Cometa. Another exhausting walk of around 30 minutes at 6 in the evening took us to this well known spot. With a lot of other tourists we were sitting on the cliff and enjoyed the beautiful sunset. It got even more beautiful when we had some of the Mezcal we got from Carlos in Oaxaca. Thank you again for that!

We enjoyed our time in this small village, but we must be honest for us the heat was really too hot to handle. So after 4 long days in Mazunte we were quite happy to escape and head to our next destination…
