The white city

From the sand dunes of Huacachina our next destination lead us deep into the mountains: Arequipa 😁

Arequipa is the biggest city in the South and lies on 2,300 meters. It is known as the white city because a lot of the baroque buildings are made of Sillar, a white volcanic rock. Three different volcanoes surround the city: Misti, Chachani and Picchu Picchu. Misti is still active but the last time it broke out was about 250 years ago. So we didn’t need to worry about that! πŸ˜…πŸŒ‹

Still a little bit tired from our sandboarding experience, we just used the first day to relax and get to know our new surroundings. Arequipa didn’t disappoint us! An amazing historical center with a stunning Plaza de Armas and finally some awesome variaties of food! πŸ½οΈπŸ˜‹

These variaties range from sushi to a lot of burger, vegan and vegetarian places. The Peruvian cuisine showed us that there is more then just a lot of chicken with rice. πŸ˜… We will definitely not forget the amazing sushi we had for dessert! πŸ£πŸ™πŸ˜

Most of the buildings in Arequipa are in colonial style which dates back to the Spanish reign. The most impressive building is by far the big cathedrale in the Plaza de Armas! To get to know more about the cities history we took another great free walking tour.

As we really enjoyed the vibe of the city we decided to relax a bit more. Just strolling around the city, shopping and cooking for ourselves at our hostel, helped us to come down from all the impressions we had the last few weeks.

But these relaxed times had to end as we were planning our next big adventure…

No we didn’t want to climb the 6,000 meter high volcano…It got even worse! πŸ™ˆπŸ˜…
